About the Crest

This crest originated in 1605 and was granted to my ancestors in Switzerland near the German border.  At the time, the Hartmann family name was spelled von Harttmann.  The legend is that the von Harttmanns were true "robber barons" in that they controlled access and use to a stretch of the Rhein River.  For safe passage, tolls were required.

By the early 1700's one part of the Hartmann family headed east attracted by the rich farmlands and rapidly developing economy of Prussia along the Oder and Warthe rivers.  Frederick the Great had mandated the draining of wetlands along the rivers which opened up the fertile bottomlands to farming and development.  My ancestors quickly settled into running mills, restaurants and teaching.  They gradually spread out through the area which was known as the Neumark area of Brandenburg, which was a core state of Prussia.

This area lies about 60 miles east of Berlin, Germany and is now under Polish control and administration having been granted to the Poles as compensation for their losses in World War II.  My grandfather founded and ran several businesses involving lumber, veneer milling, and coal supplies.  As a result of the war, the family and its businesses were completely disrupted or destroyed.  Fortunately, another scion of the family had settled Nederlands and Boulder, Colorado almost century earlier and sponsored the family's entry into the U.S.  My parents founded Hartmann's Kaffeehaus in the Catskill Mountains of New York, where I grew up.  My father was a master pastry chef and his recipes are still in use at the Kaffeehaus, almost 50 years since it was founded.  I proudly carry on the tradition of customer service, innovation and entrepreneurial drive associated with my family's crest and name.
