2% to Charity
Each year, my wife and I donate at least 2% of our earnings to charity and education. In recent years we have supported the following:
The Marion Institute---The Marion Institute is dedicated to healing the planet – and its inhabitants – by examining root causes.
National Public Radio on Cape Cod---A vital independent source for news and information, they've been quite innovative in localizing content for Cape Cod and nearby islands.
The Center for Wisdom and Compassion---A retreat facility being built in the Catskill Mountains where I grew up.
Oxfam International---Focused on poverty relief worldwide
Dartmouth College---Hanover, NH; it's a wonderful college to send your kids!
University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business---Berkeley, CA; it's a great place to study business, especially financial engineering and entrepreneurship
Santa Clara School of Law---Santa Clara, CA, the other fine law school centered in Silicon Valley!
Diversions
German-Polish Reconciliation: For the last few years, I've traveled to Berlin, Germany and western Poland to assist in relief work for the poor, aged and orphaned in the area of Germany (now Poland) from whence my family originated (see the story About the Crest). These relief efforts were begun by my friend Ulrich Lange in the 1980's. Uli was born in my grandfather's house in Berlinchen, Germany. After World War II he became a house painter in Berlin. A visit to his hometown in the late 1970's persuaded him to do something to help the poor and ailing there. His efforts started a groundswell movement of German refugees seeking to help and reconcile with Poles. Uli has won the highest civilian honors and recognition from the Polish and German governments for this work.
Cape Cod House for Rent: As avid outdoors people, my wife and I purchased a house on Cape Cod last year. It is available for rent.
